ATTENTION ALL BANDS:

just give up. you'll never be the jesus lizard, so why bother?
the last time i saw them was at lollapalooza in 1995, i saw them again on saturday. 14 years later and they were still the best fucking band ever. i'm selling my guitar and ripping out my larynx...

p.s. best live clip EVER! "nice shot, dick."
never gets old...

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2007)

ok. you will either be totally bored or totally freaked out by this film. the obvious and inevitable comparison is to the blair witch project, the only other ultra low budget modern minimalist horror film to gain massive mainstream success, but where the blair witch was all about the fear of being lost in the forest, stalked by an unseen malevolent presence, paranormal activity plays on the same fear of an unknown and unseen stalker transported into the comfort and assumed safety of your own home. personally, i really liked this movie. i appreciated the fact that it relied on the slow build up of tension and atmosphere rather than on traditional shock tactics and special effects. that being said, very little actually happens, which is why i can see a lot of people being bored by paranormal activity. although i didn't find it as terrifying as some other people in the theatre obviously did (there were some seriously fucking ridiculous reactions), overall the film was pretty effective. the acting was relatively solid and believable (especially katie featherston) and maybe if it had been edited and presented differently i would have accepted it as genuine. i've got to give the filmmakers credit for making something far more frightening with far less money than any hollywood c.g.i. heavy shitpile (and subsequently raking in millions of dollars). i would definitely recommend it to anyone into horror who's looking for something different, just be prepared to be deeply annoyed by the people sitting around you.

BEYOND THE DOOR (1974)

SATAN'S BABY DOLL (1982)

ALUCARDA (1978)

MAC ATTACK

everybody in my life is fucking sick. germs and viruses are dripping off every surface. my paranoia levels are through the fucking roof. no matter how often i wash my hands or how many magical immune boosting potions i ingest, i still feel phantom tickles in my throat which are sure signs of impending illness. i guess it's just that time of year, but fuck! i pick up the phone and i can practically hear the germs crawling out into my ear. somebody coughs or sneezes on t.v. and i instantly hold my breath. am i crazy? maybe, but i refuse to accept the possibility of getting sick in my future. i'm one step away from wearing a face mask and gloves everywhere i go. oh god, i just touched my face! i know there's some bleach around here somewhere...

FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)

SUSPIRIA (1977)

DANK NUGGS PART 2

i used to work at a&b sound, which anyone in western canada can tell you was a (now defunct) chain of music and electronics stores. i worked in the music department of the kelowna store for a couple of years, stocking shelves, helping customers and covertly making mixtapes from cds that i would order in on import. one day i noticed gary, this older guy that worked in the insurance claims department, looking at a copy of the nuggets box set. i told him that i was really into that kind of shit and he told me he used to play in a band back in the 60's and we kind of left it at that. later, i was talking with my manager who told me that gary had come to canada back in the day to dodge the draft and that he used to be the drummer of a band called the syndicate of sound. i did a little research and noticed that the drummer was named john duckworth and not gary whatever his name was, but guessed it must have had something to do with the draft dodging. the guy in the photos was definitely the guy i knew, a lot younger and a LOT thinner, but unmistakably him.

that's him, second from the right (beside jon lovitz).

i ordered the reissue of their album and gave it to him when it came in. he took it and was quiet for a minute and seemed to be getting kind of emotional, "i haven't seen this in 30 years." he said and thanked me before going back upstairs to his office.
the syndicate of sound's one hit "little girl" reached #8 on the national pop charts in 1966 and has been covered by a bunch of people including dwight yoakam, the residents and the dead boys.
i wonder if gary still gets royalties for it.

shitty sound, but that's fucking john belushi on the drums!

PUMPKINHEAD (1988)

in case you didn't already know, october is horror movie month (well, i don't know if it's OFFICIALLY horror movie month, but whatever) and seeing as horror is my shit, i thought i'd feature some of my favorites of the genre. if you live in vancouver, be sure to swing by HAPPY BATS CINEMA at 2830 main st. where you will be able to find any of these films as well as shitloads of others if you're too wimpy to watch oversexed teenagers being disemboweled by vengeful demons.

BLOOD FEAST (1963)

THE HAUNTING (1963)

GIRL POWER!

i had a weird dream this morning that i was watching the smiths playing a reunion show in my highschool drama room. it was weird because everybody was kneeling in their seats facing the back of the room and morrissey was walking around singing with a broom or a mop. he was kind of fat and sloppy looking, at times he almost resembled fred flinstone. i guess i was stoked to be seeing the smiths, but the vibe was a bummer. i don't remember what songs they played. what does a dream like that mean?
i sometimes have dreams about sonic youth as well. oddly, lee ranaldo has had random cameos in several unrelated dreams, just kinda passing through like "hey, that's lee ranaldo." and then i go back to sorting squid or masturbating with hook hands or whatever the fuck it is i dream about.
