you should also check out BEASTMASTER (1982), another film written and directed by don coscarelli. as a huge sword and sorcery buff, this movie has always been a favorite of mine. i even have a d&d character based on dar complete with animal sidekicks. it's easy to write this film off as a poor conan the barbarian rip-off, but it really stands on it's own as a fine example of the genre. it's also worth checking out coscarelli's 2002 film bubba ho-tep.
