NUDE FOR SATAN (1974)

yes, the above trailer features a bit of nudity (oddly enough for a film called "nude for satan"), sorry if that's a bummer for you...
anyway, usually with this kind of italian sleaze/horror film the original title is translated into english designed to appeal to the kind of people in america who would go see a film like this (mainly sleazebags, i assume). the italian title would normally be something like "dreams of the devil's night" or something marginally poetic like that, but not this one... nope, this one is just NUDA PER SATANA. you pretty much know what you're in for from the get go. however, the overall shittiness of this film is balanced with a genuinely dreamlike gothic atmosphere and a reasonably interesting soundtrack. the plot is mostly nonsensical and slow-moving, but it hardly matters, there's enough psychedelic imagery and laughably terrible effects (the fucking spider?? what is that, a football with some pipe cleaners glued to it?), not to mention NUDITY, to keep things interesting. anyway, enjoyable, but strictly for fans of the genre (aka: sleazebags, aka: me).

A NIGHT TO DISMEMBER (1983)

1983??? this fucking thing looks more like 1963.
of all the hundreds of shitty, good/bad/hilarious horror movies i've seen, this is hands down THE WORST. completely incomprehensible. if you've ever seen a movie like herschell gordon lewis' BLOOD FEAST or ed wood's PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, you are familiar with the aesthetic of ultra low-budget horror so inept that it actually transcends itself and becomes something more like art, or at least something enjoyable in a way that the filmmaker never intended. well, A NIGHT TO DISMEMBER is so totally BEYOND even that. that being said, the "film" works in a weird way, possessing a sort of nightmare logic that manages to be deeply unsettling (when it's not being completely hilarious). if this movie was intended as art, and i HIGHLY doubt that it was, it's somewhere in the same freudian neighborhood of luis bunuel's UN CHIEN ANDALOU or alejandro jodorowsky's HOLY MOUNTAIN or SANTA SANGRE (albeit a MUCH shittier, run down section of that freudian neighborhood full of freudian crack houses and freudian meth labs). plot? who fucking knows? the entire thing is dubbed and narrated, seemingly with no regard for what's taking place on screen. and what IS taking place on screen? it's hard to say, it's THAT disjointed. even the above trailer seems to be referring to another film half the time. all i can say is that in the stoned comfort of my living room i felt as if i was watching something that was never meant to be seen by human eyes, something from the reeking bowels of hell itself. in some ways this movie reminded me of david lynch's INLAND EMPIRE, haunting, seemingly nonsensical, constantly turning back in on itself like... a nightmare. there were moments where it almost felt like the pirate television broadcast in david cronenberg's VIDEODROME, like the mere act of watching it was having some unknown transformative effect on my brain. of course, it could have just been the weed. in any case, if you have any interest in watching terrible movies (for whatever reason), you should probably just stick to something like TROLL 2. this movie is too dangerous.
