so anyway, i read on yahoo news today (the ONLY trustworthy online news source) that somebody found a photo of a guy from the 1870's that looks exactly like nicolas cage and that therefore he may or may not be a vampire. it really does look like him. and he may really be a vampire. why not? it could explain a few things...
in other news: ladyhawk is playing a show on friday. yup, that's right, we're still a band and we're still playing shows here and there. at this point even our newest songs are oldies, but oh well... call it the ladyhawk nostalgia revue. trotting out the "hits", so to speak. anyway, it should be fun, we're playing with one of my favorite local bands needles//pins (referred to as needles AND pins, but maybe they'd prefer needles slash slash pins) as part of the olio festival. lot's of great bands that i don't know anything about are playing all over the city. if you do the 24 newspaper crossword regularly you'll know that olio means mish-mash or hodge-podge. old people do crosswords.
i feel so out of touch with new bands both here in vancouver or anywhere. i don't really go to shows anymore. i don't read music media. i don't know shit. not that i really care, i still find out about music every day. it's not new (as in current), but it's new to me. it seems now more than ever there's so much music out there (and access to that music) and that's great, but i can't be bothered to check it out. when did i stop caring? the year 2000? who knows? i feel like i need at least a 10 year buffer to sort through a lot of it for me. that being said, i love shit like ariel pink, but most of his music was written and recorded 10 years ago anyway, so...
i guess this means i'm getting old. where's my god damn crossword?
for me it's all about the music my friends make, like jennifer castle's for example, it's cool, smart, beautiful and a little weird just like her. she's gonna be in town next week (thursday, sept. 29) playing an instore at red cat records around 5pm and then later at the electric owl. it's sure to be amazing so don't miss it!

i remember when i was a kid i thought ozzy was the ultimate most evil dude out there. he was possessed by the devil and if you listened to his music you'd get possessed too and either kill yourself or your family or start doing crazy shit like drinking piss or biting the heads off live animals. stories of the kind of terrifying and disgusting things that happened at his concerts circulated through the schoolyard in frightened whispers. your buddy's older brother with the ozzy patch on his jean jacket might hear you and decide to sacrifice you to the gods of heavy metal. years later, after reading about his exploits from bands who toured with him in his heyday, i found out that all the terrifying and disgusting things i'd heard as a kid were all TRUE! and there was even MORE fucked up shit we never heard about! but instead of being evil incarnate, he was just FUCKING WASTED. and funny as hell...

MOVIN' ON UP
just watched the amazing classic albums special for primal scream's EPIC 1991 masterpiece SCREAMADELICA (thanks to sipreano for floating it my way)! i can remember scouring all the music stores in the kelowna mall (there were 3 at that point) for the cassette and never finding it. i think i even tried ordering it in, but to no avail. i had to make do with the few songs i had on a warbly mix tape from a friend. of course i had never heard of E at that time and had no context for the music, i just knew it made me feel funny, kinda... happy? sorta made me wanna... dance a bit? foreign sensations to a terminally awkward and repressed 13 year old. these days you can throw on anything (zamfir? nana mouskouri?) and i'll take my shirt off and boogie my obscenely liberated ass off whilst dousing myself in cold gatorade, but back then? nope. no sir. my how times have changed. anyway, screamadelica is one of those albums that sounds like 5 different bands fighting (or is it fucking?) for supremacy and all of them winning (or is it coming?). pure genius.
