THE ROOST (2005)

an earlier film by ti west (house of the devil) that manages to do something not new in a totally new yet not new way. obviously extremely low budget, the film uses this to it's stylistic advantage and as a result the film seems like a new school independent horror film AND an old school low budget horror film. very minimal, no real plot or characters, no explanations, just mutant bats that turn people into zombies. that and the always creepy tom noonan as a late night cable access horror host that exists at the boundaries of film, adding comment. this movie isn't perfect, or even really that good, but there's something to be said for the director's vision and the ideas he chooses to steal (or not steal) from other horror films, things that add up to having both taste and talent.
